Commander’s Message
To all Members and Friends of Henry J. Sweeney Post #2
I’d like to thank everyone who supported my run for Post Commander. I’d especially like to thank outgoing Commander Scott Johnston, who has served the Sweeney Post with honor and dignity. I appreciate his support and guidance.
As Post Commander I look forward to the tasks and challenges that the job demands. I’m excited to share this work with the other officers and as a team I know we can get things accomplished and make the Sweeney Post even better than it is.
The American Legion is the nation’s largest veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans. The Sweeney Post has a variety of programs and events which aim to serve and assist veterans and their families, and the community. Please, get involved. Come volunteer and help at some of these sponsored events.
There have been many improvements made at the Sweeney Post over the past several years, and I’m happy to say there are more improvements to be made in the near future. Stay tuned and if you have any ideas on how to improve our Post please let me know.
According to the National Veterans Suicide Prevention Annual Report, it is estimated that between 17 and 22 veterans or service members take their lives each day. The American Legion is changing lives and saving lives through it’s Be the One mission. By raising awareness through national campaigns and local events coordinated at the post level, the American Legion family is directly saving lives of veterans. I, like the American Legion, encourage you to Be the One to talk with others about how you are feeling, ask for help when you know you need it, know there are people ready to help you and remember your family and friends. If you have any ideas or recommendations regarding suicide and/or PTSD awareness please reach out to me.
In closing I’d like to say how proud I am to be your commander. I take this responsibility very seriously and that I humbly follow in the footsteps of the past commanders who preceded me. The Henry J. Sweeney Post is rich in history and I’m honored to be part of it.
Respectfully,
Greg Gaetano
Commander
