Spring 2013

Hello Sweeney Squadron
Sons of the American Legion members!

Sweeney Squadron 2 members - YOUR Squadron and Post are in need of YOUR help! Both the Legion and the Sons are in dire need of officers. We’re an organization committed to serving our community, state, and nation, and above all our veterans. We can’t do it without membership support, though.

We need able-bodied people to help us achieve our goals. We need people to show up to our meetings (they usually last about 30 – 60 minutes, and are only held once a month). We need people to help with our charities. Not only with gracious donations but with bodies to help these events and charities function. Every year the Auxiliary holds a Christmas Party for children. This is funded through their Sunday Morning Breakfasts. The Sons and the Auxiliary hold a chicken barbeque dinner every June and donate the proceeds to a great Easter Seals program called “Veterans First”. The Sons of the American Legion, on the state and national level, run great programs geared towards our youth, such as the Child Welfare Fund and the Children’s Miracle Network. The American Legion has many programs for veterans and young people like the Oratorical competition (which is a speech writing competition to teach high school students about Americanism) as well as Boys State (another program to teach high school boys about Americanism and American government). The Auxiliary has similar programs for girls. As a Legion family, we give out tens of thousands of dollars every year in donations and scholarships. All of this will come to an end without YOUR help.

Spread the word about the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion, and The American Legion Riders. Come to meetings. Learn about this 90 year old organization, its projects, events, charities, and help out. This organization thrives on volunteerism. We’re a non-profit organization that cannot survive without membership support. There are many great people involved all over the state. It’s a family organization that focuses on camaraderie and welcoming strangers, especially those who are servicemen and women and their families. There are great people in our local communities and state with a common goal in mind – helping the American Legion family prosper. Show up to events and meetings, volunteer, and meet these people. It truly is a great network of amazing people doing their part to volunteer for wonderful American organization. Come help with a dinner, attend meetings, become an officer, or simply encourage your friends and family to join and help out.

We had great success with our Christmas Toys For Tots Drive. Thanks to Sue Bessette for running that. She did a great job. At our Mid-Winter conference we were fortunate enough to have the National Sons of the American Legion Commander, Chris Huntzinger from Pennsylvania, visit us and speak. It was truly a pleasure to have him speak at our conference and our Detachment Executive Committee meeting. We were also fortunate enough to have had the lead candidate for SAL National Commander, Joe Gladden from Maryland, visit us at the beginning of December. He’s a credit to the Detachment of Maryland and to the SAL.

Our Valentine’s Dinner was completely sold out! It was pushed back a week due to inclement weather, but we still packed the house, and a great meal was served. Thanks to Sue Bessette, again, and her kitchen crew. They did a wonderful job preparing and serving the meal. And believe me, that’s no small feat.

In the upcoming months we have Sweeney Baseball’s St. Patrick’s Day dinner, the Auxiliary’s Spring Dinner, and the Sons and Auxiliary’s chicken BBQ to benefit the Easter Seals “Veterans Count” program. You can find out more about that program by going to nh.easterseals.org and clicking on “Services” then “Veterans Services”.

March 18 we have elections. As of the writing of this newsletter we only have 2 people running for office:

COMMANDER: MATTHEW WHITMORE
SAL ADVISOR: WILLIAM WHITMORE

We still need a Senior Vice Commander, Junior Vice Commander, Service Officer, Historian, and Sergeant At Arms. If you’d like to run for office you need to write a brief letter of intent and submit it to the Squadron Adjutant BEFORE March 18.

Remember the American Legion is NOT just “a local bar.” We’re a non-profit organization dedicated to serving our community, state, and nation, and above all veterans and their families. We’re funded through membership dues and fundraisers. And we only survive with the support of our members. GET INVOLVED!

Finally, if you’ve recently had a change of your home address, phone number, or e-mail address please fill out this form below. We strive to keep current members’ information up to date in the event that we need to contact anyone. Your information will never be shared! Please write legibly and include your member ID number, as we have several members with the same name.

You can drop it off at Sweeney for the SAL Adjutant or mail it to us at:
