Winter 2012

Hello Sweeney Squadron
Sons of the American Legion members!

Winter is upon us! And, with that, our Squadron is busy preparing for the holidays. Sue Bessette is running the Toys for Tots program and Matt Whitmore is setting up a food drive for the NH Food Bank. For every 3 non perishable food items you bring in you’ll be given a raffle ticket. The prize is a $25 gift certificate to the Belmont Hall. Drawings will be held on Fridays at 7pm for the rest of the month. Please bring all donations down to Sweeney Post.

Congratulations go out to all of our members who have renewed their dues! Sweeney was the third Squadron to hit their 100% membership goal set by the state. So far only 3 squadrons have accomplished that and we’re proud to say we were able to do it again. Last we year we came in fourth place, next year we hope to be able to be the second squadron to reach that! This goal is only attainable if members promptly pay their dues! The American Legion membership year runs from July 1 – June 30. Remember – your 2012 membership card EXPIRES after December 31st. You will be refused entry into any Legion. Let’s avoid that by coming down to Sweeney and paying your dues or mailing a check in BEFORE December 31st. And if you have friends or family at this or any other Posts, Squadrons, and Units encourage them to pay their dues ASAP! You will find membership applications for the Sons of the American Legion and American Legion on the reverse side of the front of this newsletter. Feel free to make as many copies as you’d like and recruit friends and family! Dues for the Legion are $28 per year and dues for the Sons are $15 per year.

The Sweeney Squadron Sons of the American Legion are also planning for next spring. We would like to have our members come down and donate items to be sold at a yard sale to be held here sometime in late spring, weather permitting. We would be doing this as a fundraiser for our squadron. So this coming spring if you have anything around the house, garage, basement, attic, or storage unit that’s taking up space and doing you no good then bring it to Sweeney and donate it to us!

We held our second annual Luau in August and our annual Italian Night in September. Both dinners were a hit! Thank you to all the members who bought tickets and came down for a great night. Thank you for supporting your Squadron and Post!

The Sons are looking to start having live bands play on Friday nights. Are you in a band? Do you know someone who is? Get in touch with the Squadron Senior Vice Commander, Matt Whitmore, and let him know. He can be e-mailed at mwhitmore82@yahoo.com.

Sweeney has moved into the 21st century and now has a Facebook page AND a revamped website. Please “Like” us on Facebook and bookmark our website to get the latest updates on Sweeney events for Legion, Auxiliary, and Sons! The URL’s are listed at the top of this newsletter. You can also join our e-mail list to get periodic updates on Sweeney events by e-mailing post2news@comcast.net. Simply write “Subscribe” in the subject line and include your name in the body.

We’re looking for pictures of Legion, Auxiliary, and Sons people at Sweeney events. Do you or someone you know have any? Please send them our way; we’d love to include them on our website!

The Sweeney Post Honor Guard is still looking for people who can assist us to march in parades. If you or someone you know is interested please come down and leave your contact info for Sharkey Madden. All Legionnaires, Sons, and Auxiliary are invited!

Don’t forget – our monthly meetings are always held on the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:30pm. They usually last about an hour or less. Membership participation is a key factor in the success or failure of a Squadron so we encourage ALL members to come and sit with us, even if it’s just to listen in! New faces are always welcome and the more people who get involved the better our organization will be.

While attending an SAL Detachment Executive Committee (DEC) meeting this November our Senior Vice Commander was informed that the Mid-Winter conference will be held at Rochester Post 7 on Saturday January 26 at 9am. The Rochester Post is located at 94 Eastern Ave in Rochester.  Their phone number is 603-332-2024 if you need to reach them for directions or any other information. ALL members are encouraged to attend. These are great, informative meetings. You see who your state Commanders and Presidents are as well as learn about all the different charities we help out and the many events we hold around the state.

Next year’s State Convention will be held on June 19 – 23. It will be in Manchester, again, at the Radisson. It’s $110 per night for a room. Parking will be validated for $5. This is another meeting that all members are encouraged to go to! You don’t need to be an officer, any member can attend. Mark these on your calendar!

Finally, a constant problem for our adjutant is keeping up with people’s contact information. People frequently move without filling out a change of address form or coming down and letting us know. Help us out by taking a moment to fill out the form at the bottom of the page. Even if you think we have the correct contact information please fill it out, we may have old data! Please include your member ID number because we have several members with the same name.

Your information will never be shared! It’s simply being collected for the Squadron to keep on file in the event that we have a problem with your membership or for when we need to contact everyone to let them know about a change in a Post or Squadron policy, as well as changes to the constitution, by-laws, or some other unforeseeable event. Please write legibly.

You can drop it off at Sweeney for the SAL Adjutant or mail it to us at:
