Hello Sweeney Post
Sons of the American Legion members!
Summer is here! And with it comes another newsletter from the Sons of the American Legion Sweeney Post # 2. The past 3 months have been busy for the SAL.
Several of the Sons joined the Sweeney Legionnaires while doing volleys at over 20 monuments and parks dedicated to Manchester vets for Memorial Day. This is an annual event that starts around 7 am and lasts until about noon. We marched in the Manchester parade later that day. It was a great time. We hope to see more SAL members tag along next year!
We also held our annual Flag Day ceremony. This ceremony is run by the SAL and we properly retire unserviceable flags. It’s a great honor to be entrusted with this solemn task. Special thanks to Dave Cebulko, Joe O’Keefe, and Bill Roy for stepping up and helping us to fill our personnel void when we really needed it. They were a great help and we couldn’t have done it without them.
In June we held our annual chicken barbeque with the Auxiliary. All the proceeds were donated to the Easter Seals program “Veteran’s Count”. This excerpt is taken from the NH Easter Seals website: “Easter Seals Veterans Count and the Deployment Cycle Support Program ensures New Hampshire's veterans, service members and their families receive exceptional services maximizing their quality of life in recognition of their service and sacrifice for the community.” We had a great turn out this year and we were able to raise $1500 at the dinner, all of which is donated to Veterans Count. Thanks to Mike Cormier from Easter Seals for attending the dinner and receiving the check on their behalf. For more information on this great program please visit http://nh.easterseals.com and click on the “Veteran Services” link on the left side of the page.
Another big turn of events that started on July 1, 2012 is the smoking ban at Sweeney. Members who smoke are encouraged to do so out on our fenced-in back yard, where you can enjoy a cigarette while you enjoy your drink. Non-smoking members will be relieved of the smoky environment and can now enjoy their time here without worrying about their asthma, COPD, or other breathing ailments being bothered.
The 2013 membership cards are here and awaiting you to pick them up! Please come in and renew your membership. This past year we beat our 100% membership goal as well as set an ALL TIME HIGH for membership of the Sweeney Post Sons of the American Legion!!! GREAT JOB EVERYONE! AND THANK YOU! We couldn’t have done it without you. We ask that everyone come in and pay their $15 annual dues as soon as possible. If you can’t make it in please mail us a check and your membership card will be promptly mailed to you. Let’s hit that 100% mark again and then beat it! If you have friends or family members that have parents, grandparents, or great grandparents that are veterans send them down to sign up! It’s only $15 per year for adults and $8 per year for anyone under 21 or anyone who is already a Legionnaire. And you get a membership in the world’s largest veteran’s organization as well as the best Post in the state – SWEENEY POST! All members who pay their dues on or before October 20 are automatically qualified to attend our “Early Bird” dinner. It’s a free dinner to any individual who has paid their dues early! Thanks again to everyone who paid their dues last year. Let’s get the 2013 card paid too!
We encourage all members to attend our monthly meetings. They usually run 30 – 45 minutes. We’d like to see as many people as possible attend our meetings. The more heads we have the more ideas we can come up with on what to do with the Sweeney Post SAL and how to prosper this great organization. Help us out! We all win in the end. Meetings are the 3rd Monday of every month and start at 6:30 pm.
And finally, the Sweeney Post Honor Guard is looking for people who are able to volunteer their time. We go to funerals and do volleys as well as march in a few parades. If you’re up to the task and available during weekday mornings we’d love to have you. Please come down and leave your name and phone number at the bar for Sharkey Madden. Volunteerism is always appreciated!
